Lesson 57: The challenge to success

Dear Readers,

How are you this morning?

Unfortunately, I was out of action this week due to Covid. (Little reminder to stay safe, wash your hands, wear a mask if you have symptoms – to protect others – and if possible, stay at home). It wasn’t as bad as the first time I got it, but it still wasn’t great.

I’ve been taking the time to listen to some podcasts and yesterday I heard the story of Keith Jarrett and the broken piano.

In 1975 Keith Jarett was due to perform in front of 1400 people at the Cologne Opera House. However, the piano was classed as “unplayable”. The keys didn’t work, it was quiet, out of tune and the upper notes were tinny.

At first he refused to play because he found the whole thing embarrassing, but after much pleading from the organiser, he relented.

The piano was tuned, but the other problems were still there – nevertheless he played – with the tools he had.

The concert was described as one of the best performances the world has ever seen. The audience realised that he was one with the music.

Sometimes an obstacle or the fact that you are outside your comfort zone forces you to do something you would never have thought of, and the result can be something you would never have dreamed of!

So – break out of your comfort zone, take risks, make mistakes, but enjoy the potential rewards.

As always,

Thanks for reading
