Lesson 51 – Be in the now

Dear Readers,

how are you today? I hope you’re doing well and that (like me) you can slowly feel the winter ebb away. Unless you’re in the southern hemisphere and you are maybe starting to see the first glimpses of Autumn.

We’ve been quite lucky here and the weather hasn’t been too cold.

I really hate feeling cold – however ever since I have started having cold showers every morning the cold doesn’t bother me as much.

Last week we had an amazingly sunny Sunday and I decided to take a trip down to the river. It’s only a 10 minute walk from my place and it’s my favourite place to go in order to read. I sat down on the little pebble beach and got out my kindle and started to read.

I’m currently reading an amazing book called “The Power of Now” by Eckart Tolle and it’s teaching me to embrace living in the present moment – and to stop dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

While I was reading, the sun came out of hiding and I immediately felt the warmth on my skin.

It was amazing.

I stopped reading and closed my eyes.

I felt the sun on my skin.
I listened to the sound of the stream.
I smelt the fresh air.

I opened my eyes again.

I stared at the beautiful blue reflection in the water.
I gazed at the pebbles around my feet.

In that moment I felt free. I was freed of any negative feelings and I had a sense of peace.

We often spend so much time and energy thinking about things we can’t change.

The past can’t be erased. It will always remain somewhere in our memory.
Bad things may have happened in the past. You may have done things that you wish you hadn’t done. If you focus on these things a negative energy starts to build up inside you. An energy which grows stronger with each minute.

Regret, guilt, resentment or bitterness. These feelings start to flow through your inner channels and – mess up your current feeling of bliss.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we waste so much of our precious time (time which is a non-renewable resource) on feeling bad about something that can’t be changed anyway?

By being in the past you are completely missing out on the current moment. You’re losing the opportunity to see something special.

Maybe your soul-mate walks past you at that moment and you don’t see them, because you’re thinking about that time when you burnt dinner and your friends laughed at you. (Sorry – I slipped into the romantic!)

The same happens when you think about the future.

Worry, Stress, AnxietyFEAR – all comes from thinking about what you don’t even know will happen! Again – we’re throwing away time and energy on a mere guess.

We lose so much time planning for a future that will never come. On the way to work you could be struck by a drunk driver and killed instantly. Maybe you were killed because you didn’t see the driver as you were stuck worrying about a meeting that was happening that afternoon.

The amazing thing is – we have complete control over our mind.

This is actually one of the only things we can control and when we feel our minds drifting to either the past or the future, we can say “nope – get back here!”.

Take a deep breath, connect with your body and experience the present moment – experience the now!

Wooo – I was on a bit of a roll there 🙂

Anyway – as always: thanks for reading.
